Yanqi Lake Beijing Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Applications (BIMSA) is announcing 8 full-time postdoctoral positions in the newly launched focus area of Biomathematics, which performs bi-directional applications of mathematics in biosciences for establishing a collaborative corridor between fundamental research in pure mathematics and frontier development in biosciences. The main mission of Biomathematics is to explore the fundamental laws of biology and mathematical foundation of life science, one of grand mathematical challenges for the 21st century. Specifically, Biomathematics will
- Develop mathematical research on the subjects related to complex biological networks and/or multiscale dynamics in biology.
- Develop application-guided mathematical research on the subjects related to biological systems, genetics, genomics, and omics data.
- Develop practical applications of mathematical theories in modern biosciences and related areas.
towards to attacking the following questions in DARPA 23 grand mathematical challenges:
- Mathematical Challenge Two: The Dynamics of Networks.
- Mathematical Challenge Fifteen: The Geometry of Genome Space
- Mathematical Challenge Twenty-three: What are the Fundamental Laws of Biology?
The candidates do not have to already be in the area of biomathematics, but are willing to apply mathematics to biosciences, which would be desirable. The researchers will work on projects aligned with the vision and mission, including with senior members of the group, Stephen Yau and Jie Wu, and with many key international collaborators. These two-year positions, with the possibility of extension up to one more year, have a starting date of 1 September 2022 and are open to all candidates who have a recent PhD (within past five years) with strong background in the fields including (but not limited to) topology/geometry, computational topology/geometry, bioinformatics, mathematical biology, computational physics/chemistry/biology, scientific computing, machine learning. Successful candidates have opportunities to participate in international visiting and exchange activities.
Responsibilities for Postdoc:
- Choose a mentor from Stephen Yau and Jie Wu;
- Fulfill public service duties assigned by the Institute, such as Teaching Assistant.
Compensation for Postdoc:
- A competitive annual salary will be offered in the range of RMB 300,000~500,000 (commensurate with applicants’ overall quality);
- An Employment Contract will be concluded according to relevant rules stipulated in the Employment Contract Law of the People’s Republic of China and successful applicants will be enrolled into China’s Social Insurance scheme;
- Shuttle bus service is available, transporting faculty between the Institute and the Tsinghua University, and between the Institute and the dormitories located in Dingxiu Meiquan Town in Huairou District;
- Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work with outstanding teams from around the world;
- There is sufficient research funding support including a generous travel grant for collaboration with top research centers around the world;
- There are also opportunities to work with other departments at Tsinghua, CAS and industries;
