Postdoc in TDA and NLP, 3 years, Düsseldorf, Germany, deadline 15 June 2022

duration: 3 years
starting date: as soon as possible
location: Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany

This new position is funded by Prof. Milica Gasic’ ERC starting grant DYMO, and thus comes with no teaching duties. The aim of the project is to build the next generation of human-computer dialogue models. The postdoc will investigate the use of topological data analysis in natural language generation, combating the known problems of large pre-trained language models. Any insights gained could be applied to other areas of human-computer dialogue modelling and natural language processing more generally, where the current neural network models face limitations.

While this position is primarily based within the research group of Prof. Milica Gasic (Dialogue Systems and Machine Learning), collaboration with my group (Topology and Geometry) is expected, and I will be closely involved in the selection of candidates. Prior experience in one or more of the named areas would be beneficial, but we encourage outstanding candidates from all areas of mathematics to apply.

The position will be paid at the TV-L E13 scale (see https://www.academics.com/guide/salary-researchers-germany for more information). No knowledge of German is required.

Applications should be sent to milica.gasic at hhu.de by 15 June.  For informal enquiries, please contact either milica.gasic at hhu.de or me (marcus.zibrowius at hhu.de).

TDA Postdoc in Aalborg, Denmark (deadline June 9 2022)

JOB DESCRIPTION

What we offer:
We offer a postdoc position within the Department of Mathematical Sciences as part of the project “Deciphering Nanoporosity of Amorphous Materials using Topological Data Analysis”. The selected candidate will be conducting research supervised by Lisbeth Fajstrup and Christophe A.N. Biscio and in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience to find new topological descriptors of porosity. The selected candidate will visit Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA for 4 months to collaborate with Staff Scientist Dmitriy Morozov.

What we request:
The selected candidate will hold a PhD in Mathematics or a related field and will have promising research results within Topological Data Analysis, Computational Topology or related subjects.
The project to which the postdoc will contribute involves developing new computational topological methods to describe variations of the free volume and in particular tunnels in amorphous materials and implementation of such insight as a tool. This will require a strong background in Topological Data Analysis either computational or theoretical.

Journées de Géométrie Algorithmique, online workshop, May 30 – June 1

The French meeting on Computational Geometry (JGA — Journées de Géométrie Algorithmique) will be 100% virtual this year, and will take place the afternoons (French time) from:

Monday May 30th to Wednesday June 1st 2022.

We invite contributed talks both in French and in English, and particularly encourage PhD students and early career researchers to give presentations on their work (see below for registration).

***** DESCRIPTION *****

The JGA conference is dedicated to uniting members of the French research community interested in Computational Geometry and related fields, including but not restricted to algorithms and computational complexity, geometric and topological data analysis, combinatorics, computer graphics, discrete geometry, optimal transport and geometric measure theory, among other areas.

The conference is especially geared towards creating an environment for young members of the research community, including PhD students and postdocs, to present their recent results and to interact with other researchers. One of the main goals is to foster and encourage new ideas in a welcoming setting.

This year, we are happy to announce 3 keynotes by invited speakers:

-) Marthe Bonamy (CNRS-LaBRI)

-) Arnau Padrol (IMJ-PRG)

-) Gabriel Peyré (CNRS-ENS)

***** REGISTRATION *****

Registration is FREE but MANDATORY. The registration is open until May 20th.

All of the information regarding JGA 2022, as well as the registration page, are available on the conference website:

https://project.inria.fr/jga2022/

Please feel free to distribute this announcement as widely as possible.

Topological Data Visualization Workshop, U of Iowa, May 16-20

https://homepage.divms.uiowa.edu/~idarcy/CONF/TDV.html

May 16 – 20, 2022     University of Iowa

Organizers:
Isabel Darcy, University of Iowa
Bei Wang, University of Utah

Funded by NSF DMS RTG 2038103: PI Keiko Kawamuro

Some datasets are too small for standard statistical/data analysis to
accurately characterize the data. Others are extremely large and data
size reduction methods may be needed. One solution is to use
topological data analysis to simplify and/or visualize data. This
workshop will include both tutorials and research talks on topological
techniques for visualizing data.

This is an in-person workshop with a hybrid component for those who
wish to join virtually.

Free registration. Travel funds are available for speakers and
graduate students.
